The Pendulum

The Pendulum is an independent writing project from creatives Sarah Winkler and Justin Joyce.

We are animated to write by many things: the continuing, baffling movements of our respective political elites, the cultural forces that push and pull at the current status quo, the experiences drilled into us to handle this current moment and the art that drives us to keep writing. We are also animated by the desire to have a place we can comment on these things that is further removed from major platforms and the larger media institutions that grate against what interests us.

Here at The Pendulum, we still believe that things can be better. But, for us, we need to make sense of ourselves and the ways we interact with the world. We want to follow the arc, from Australia to the USA.

We believe in writing whatever it is that will help us make sense of it all, and we hope it can help you too.

Sarah Rosina Winkler

Sarah Rosina Winkler is a German-Australian writer, editor, translator and podcaster. Their home is divided into Berlin and Naarm (Melbourne), where they spend their time thinking about YA, audio fiction and music. They’re also an activist and advocate for mental health, neurodivergence and queerness.

Justin Joyce

(he/they)

Justin Joyce is an Oregon-based, NYC-born writer, journalist, game designer, and podcaster. His work has ranged from comics to audio dramas to investigative articles. His journalism career has been spent covering theater, tabletop games, and the internet.
